And he loves it, he didn’t think he would but he says it’s actually fun to drive (RWD and very quick off the line!), much bigger inside than he was expecting and a really nice place to be. He was looking at it as a 3rd car for just running the kids around to the swimming, football, rugby etc but says he might get the range extender one now as it’s much more liveable than he expected and could be used for longer trips. He originally wanted a Renault Zoe but his wife wants a BMW (cos she still misses her 2007 118d 3dr), he even likes the looks (I think they look ok in certain colours and at least you don’t pass yourself multiple times every day).

I see a fair number of them in my area. They seem like nice, roomy, practical daily drivers. I agree that, depending on the color and also the angle, they can look very nice in a futuristic sort of way, or kind of dopey.

If he’s seriously considering an I3 make sure he checks out the Volt. Much, much less restrictive on use.

Volt is unavailable new in the UK, the first gen was sold here in tiny numbers, we have the Vauxhall Ampera which is similar. The only shot we have at the secondition gen Volt is if a second gen Ampera is made.

I sat in an i3 a while ago, and was shocked by how roomy the interior is. It made me want one as well (can’t afford it though!).

Yeah this, we don’t (and won’t according to Vauxhall) get the new Volt, plus my sister in law really wants a BMW again (she currently drives a leased new shape Astra 1.6 Turbo SRi).

Yeah, they are surprisingly large in person!

Yep. I’m a big dude, I love a bench seat and a column shifter. Most new cars with their wide center consoles and enormous center stacks, they make even big cars feel cramped. I sat in a long wheelbase Jag XJ right after I sat in the i3, and the seating area is so narrow that I couldn’t even get the door closed without crushing my nards. The i3, on the other hand, gave me room for days!

The i3 will, of course be more punchy in most situations than the Astra or 118d, I’d certainly have one in a heartbeat if I could afford one.

Yeah the i3 is quick off the line, not as quick 0-60 as the Astra (7.8'ish for the i3, 6.6 for the Astra) and their 118d had been “fettled” by Celtic Tuning so was pretty lively!

Damn, that’s too bad. I don’t see why they wouldn’t sell the Volt/Ampera gen2 over there where gas is so much more expensive than the US. Of course, if they marketed them in the rest of the world like they did in the US I can see why they didn’t sell many. (Little to negligible marketing for gen 1 or 2 in the US that I’ve seen)
